Inclusive Improv Camp

What does a typical day look like at the Inclusive Improv Summer Camp?

Camp drop-off begins at 8:45 am. Campers are checked in and introduced to the space, as well as other campers, with camp starting at 9:00 am. Campers will gather in the rehearsal hall, where they will be introduced to the art of improvisation, play improv games, get to know their fellow campers, and have lots of time for breaks throughout. At 11:30, students will be given a snack break. A snack of popcorn, fruit snacks, and water will be provided, but students can also bring their own snack if they prefer. Students can be picked up in front of the theatre at 1:00 pm.

What is provided for Inclusive Improv campers?

In addition to a snack each day, campers will receive a summer camp t-shirt, a completed list of all the improv games they will learn in camp, note-taking supplies, and other supplies required to participate. During camp, inclusive campers will also have access to fidgets, headphones, cushions, and sunglasses, as well as a quiet space for campers who need a sensory break.

How will snack/breaks work at the Inclusive Improv Summer Camp?

Campers may take a break at any point throughout the day in addition to scheduled breaks. Snack time will be at 11:30 am and will last 30 minutes. Snacks will be provided, but students can also bring their own snacks if desired.

Is there a performance?

Yes! The Inclusive Improv culminates in a showcase for campers, where they will demonstrate their skills. The showcase will be at 12:00 pm and is open to friends and family, but participants will still be dropped off by 9:00 am so that they can rehearse for their performance.

What is the benefit of participating in the Inclusive Improv Summer Camp?

ETC’s Inclusive Improv Camp is a great way for students to make friends, learn important aspects of theatre, practice creative self-expression, and hone skills to apply in their everyday lives, such as communication, confidence, and teamwork. Our camps and classes ignite students’ imaginations through the collaborative process of theatre, empower them as creative thinkers, and support their development as artists and young adults!

What is improvisation?

Improvisation, or improv, is spontaneous theatre. The performers make up the show, usually comedy, right on the spot! Improv is an excellent way for students of all ages and abilities to explore creative expression and learn the basics of acting and theatre. Students work collaboratively, explore abstract thinking, venture outside their comfort zones, grow in confidence, and, most importantly, have fun!

What is the registration process for the Inclusive Improv camp?

The first step to registering for this camp is to fill out the application on our website. Once that has been submitted to us, we will then reach out to you about setting up a time to have a meet-and-greet with you and your camper. This is a great opportunity for us to get to know participants and for participants to get to know us, as well as become familiar with the space where the camp will take place. These meet-and-greets will take place at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati.

How many campers and teaching artists will be at the Inclusive Improv camp?

Our Inclusive Improv camp includes 10 students and 3-4 teachers. This camp is intentionally small so that our teaching artists can have plenty of interaction with each camper throughout the day.

How do I know if the Inclusive Improve Camp is right for my student?

We encourage you to reach out and talk to us if you are curious whether this camp is a good fit for your student. Our education team is working with Anchor ABA, an Autism clinic in Mason, OH, who is assisting us in meeting the needs of each of our campers. Students who are nonverbal or have mobility aides, as well as students with other diagnoses besides Autism, are welcome to register for our camp. At this time, we ask that students be independent in using the restroom or other personal care needs. Students will only be asked not to attend camp if it is a safety concern for them or others. We can work with you to determine what your student needs to attend camp or if it is not a good fit right now.
